A Four-Part Pop-Up Series Honoring South Florida’s Love for Cafecitos and Premium Rum  

Brugal 18888, a premium rum crafted in the Dominican Republic, today announces “La Ventanita”: a four-neighborhood pop up series that celebrates South Florida’s ventanita culture and love for exceptional rum cocktails. The activation, which will bring the flair and flavor of the Dominican Republic to Miami, will kick off on September 19 in Brickell City Center and make three additional stops in top neighborhoods through early 2022. Those locations will remain a surprise until opening, a playful nod to five generations of distilling secrets kept within the Brugal family.   

A unique blend of passion for freshly brewed coffee and espresso as well as exceptional rum mastery, La Ventanita will be equal parts bustling daytime coffee shop and swinging evening rum bar. During “cafecito runs,” guests can lounge among plush seating and sofas while enjoying selections from catering partner Dos Croquetas, such as Café Con Leche or Cafecito alongside a pastelito, with flavors including Guava & Cheese topped with a coconut infused glaze and toasted coconut, or Picadillo & Plantain. At 4:00pm each day, La Ventanita will energetically transition into the Brugal 1888 Rum Bar, a sensory experience unveiling the magic behind the distillery to cocktail process and how 130 years of rum mastery translate into a unique spirit. Master mixologists will shake up craft cocktails showcasing the premium rum – such as the signature Don Nano’s Favorite with Brugal 1888 and a coconut water ice sphere, as well as “La Ventanita,” a Brugal 1888 coffee infused cocktail – while sharing stories of the legendary Brugal family.

“With La Ventanita, we hope to share our family traditions here in the Dominican Republic with everyone in the South Florida area. Some of my best days have started with a cafecito and pastelito, and have ended with an evening filled with dancing, singing and, of course, rum cocktails with my family and loved ones,” said Brugal 1888 Maestra Ronera Jassil Villanueva Quintana. “It is an honor to be able to continue my family’s legacy of crafting a beloved product like Brugal 1888, and I look forward to bringing that experience to life through La Ventanita.”  

The Brugal 1888 La Ventanita will be set on the 2nd floor Garden Deck of Brickell City Center, directly across from ZARA, from September 19 – 28, 2021. The Cafecito Shop will be open from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and the Brugal 1888 Rum Bar from 4:00 – 9:00 p.m. daily. Guests can enjoy a variety of immersive experiences that bring the Dominican Republic to life in Miami, including rum tasting classes with Brugal 1888 ambassadors, guest bartender evenings with top local bartenders, domino tournaments and more.

The Craft Spirits ‘N Cocktails Festival, Miami’s largest exhibition of spirits and cocktails, is only one month away. The festival will take place in Iconic Cruz Building in Coconut Grove on Friday, October 8th, 2021. The main event will demonstrate the best and brightest components of resurgent spirits and cocktail culture for all attendees to enjoy. Consumers will not only learn about and engage with the world of spirits, but they will also get the chance to explore the essence and allure of the industry. 

Craft Spirits ‘N Cocktails Founder, Frank Moreno, cannot wait to celebrate with Miami spirits and cocktail consumers and enthusiasts. “The goal when we started was to create a memorable event, where the curious novice or experienced aficionado, had the opportunity to learn and enjoy the craftsmanship and authenticity that goes into spirits and cocktails,” said Moreno. However, for the eighth year, Moreno is eager to entice a more specific audience. “This year we are limiting attendance to elevate the experience and safety for attendees and brands alike,” explained Moreno. 

There is more fun to be found as more spirit and cocktail enthusiasts abound. In addition to the five-day celebration, the days before the festival will include bartender competitions, happy hours, and many more activities to set a fun, thrilling tone for the subsequent event. 

On Monday, October 4th, the week of Craft Spirits ‘N Cocktails will kick off with an exciting competition called the BareKnuckle Bartender™ which will take place at 8 p.m. During the competition, Miami’s biggest and baddest bartenders will compete to make the best cocktails in a “Chopped-style” competition. The winner will earn the highly sought-after title of BareKnuckle Bartender Champ. The event is open to the public so everyone has the opportunity to start the week off with some fun, excitement, and good old-fashioned battle bartending. This event’s location is TBD so attendees should be on the lookout for more information so they don’t miss out on this opportunity. 

On Tuesday, October 5th, attendees can up the ante by heading to Cerveceria La Tropical (42 NE 25th St). Cerveceria La Tropical will host a Tapped Tuesday Extravaganza that starts at 7 p.m. Guests can “pre-game” with a Happy Hour highlighted by beer and spirited cocktails. This event is also open for the public’s enjoyment.  

On Wednesday, October 6th, ladies may strut on over to Bar Nancy (2007 SW 8th St) for Women, Whiskey & Wieners™. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the best women in the Miami bar industry will make and serve divine and delectable whiskies and whiskey cocktails from 6 to 10 p.m. The best part? A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Miami USBG Relief Fund. This event is open to the public so come one and come all for the festivities.   

Last but not least, all the fun festival events come to a culmination on Friday, October 8th. It’s the moment everyone has been waiting for, the belle of the ball, la piece de la resistance, Craft Spirits ‘N Cocktails 2021. Craft Spirits ‘N Cocktails will take place at The Cruz Building (3157 Commodore Plaza) from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. This incredible, large-scale tasting event will showcase over 100 spirits and cocktails from across the country and around the world. Attendees may also delight in food samples from local restaurants, Prohibition Era live jazz, DJ, and a rooftop cigar lounge! Tickets start at $75.

The prestigious American Fine Wine Competition,  announced the result for The Invitational, which takes place annually in south Florida.  With the Pandemic wreaking havoc for the past year, the judging was delayed, and took place on Memorial Day Weekend.  More than 550 wines from 125 wineries vied for top honors at this INVITATION-only event. The Judging — conducted by a 28-member blue ribbon panel of wine industry educators, restaurateurs, retailers, journalists, and top sommeliers from across the country — was held at the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management at Florida International University, Biscayne Bay Campus.

As usual, the results did not disappoint!  There were ties for Best of Show Red wine AND Best of Show Sparkling.  And the Sparkling wines were from the same winery!  Equally exciting, there was also a tie for Best of Class Riesling, which was the case last year as well. 

Co-founder and President Shari Gherman said, “At AFWC, we look for the very best wines the country has to offer, and so they must be vetted before being invited.  This year was challenging since the country was pretty much shut down.  But with some creativity, we persevered, and as one can see by the results, we found stunning wines yet again.”

The Judges had an incredibly difficult time coming up with the Best of Class results.  Judge Wendy Rosano said, “Of the 11 double gold medal winning Red Bordeaux Blends, it was almost impossible to pick one!”  Judge Patrick Sullivan said, “The 12 Double Gold medal winning Syrah’s were so awesome, we actually finished drinking our glasses!”  In the Cabernet Sauvignon category, there were five flights where ALL the wines were awarded double gold medals.   

Fourteen years of careful scouting and judging means this competition starts where others end.  Four-team judging panels evaluate, describe, debate and assign medals and scores. “Our Judges take their time and really care about getting it right” observed Greg Miseyko, Chief Judge and Judging Coordinator.  Wines earn Gold, Silver or Bronze medals and “Double Gold” honors when every judge agrees the wine deserves a Gold Medal. Points from a 100-point scale are also awarded.  Miseyko added “We want to direct the public to America’s finest wines, to become the most trusted source of information about finding quality wines.” 

Remember, Price doesn’t always dictate the finest. Quality does.

Last Monday May  24th, BACARDI honored Miami’s trailblazers and culture movers with Premium cocktails & delicious food pairings.

An evening to celebrate creatives, philanthropists, tech titans, business and community leaders who are blazing a trail in respective industries and making the world a better place through the work that they are committed to doing.

Hosted by Master of Rum David Cid and Janet Benitez, guests were welcome with a refreshing “Hotel Nacional” cocktail ( Bacardi Reserva Ocho Rum, Pineapple juice, Lime juice, Simple Syrup, Apricot Liqueur)  and invited to the table for a pairing dinner and the Red Rooster restaurant in Overtown, featuring aged rum Bacardi Reserva 8 and Bacardi Reserva 10 cocktails. The second Cocktail was the “Old Cuban” (Bacardi Reserva Ocho Rum, Martini & Rossi Prosecco, Sugar Syrup, Lime Juice, Dashes bitters) paired with Chef Marcus Samuelson famous dishes such as the devil eggs, Marcus cornbread, fried yardbird, shrimp & grits, grilled Yellowtail Snapper and finished with I’m in love with cocoa, a chocolate feast dessert paired with the “Cane collective Ocho old Fashioned” cocktail.

David educated all patrons about aged rums with a tasting of Bacardi Reserva 8 and Bacardi Reserva 10 between meals. As the night ended, the guests were greeted with a beautiful gift that included a wooden box with a bottle of Bacardi Reserva Ocho Rum, a bottle of Cane collective Sweet Potato On Syrup  to make your own Old Fashion and a cigar to pair with.

FIU students celebrated when they were announced as the winners of the People’s Choice Award at this year’s South Beach Wine & Food Festival Art of Tiki Cocktail Showdown, celebrated at the Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel on South Beach, on Saturday, May 22nd.

Students  participating from the Hospitality School and Bacardi Center of Excellence Bartender’s Guild club, alongside professional mixologists and bartenders took home the top prize for their cocktail, The Sunblazer. The drink was made with six ingredients including: pineapple juice, lemon juice, Bacardi Ocho and even honey syrup cultivated by the FIU Beekeeping Association.

Judges gave their top prize to Landon Nero of Freehold Miami in Wynwood.

100% of the net proceeds from the Festival benefit FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management. Each year, over 1,200 students and volunteers gain invaluable real-world experience at the Festival. To date, SOBEWFF® – which serves as an interactive educational platform for future leaders of the hospitality industry – has raised more than $31.8 million for the School.

VIP Admission includes: special whiskey pours NOT available to General Admission, a commemorative glass, whiskey samples, light bites, and one (1) cigar. Every ticket includes entry into a raffle for a bottle of special whiskey. A very limited number of VIP tickets will be available to the public.

GENERAL ADMISSION MWM tickets will be available for $75. General Admission begins at 3 pm and ends at 5:45 pm. General Admission includes whiskey samples, light bites, and one (1) cigar.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

ALL Attendees MUST be 21 and older. NO EXCEPTIONS.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

THE CRUZ BUILDING is located at 3157 Commodore Plaza in Coconut Grove. There is plenty of off-street parking plus there will be valet parking at the building’s entrance for at a special rate. We STRONGLY suggest using UBER or LYFT for this special event.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, the electronic version is perfectly acceptable.

For the first time ever in the US, acclaimed wine critic James Suckling presented The Largest Wine Event, which chose Miami as its host city this past January 24th, at the Moore Building. 

Featuring 120 wine producers from the top wine regions in the world, the event showcased an extraordinary selection of more than 200 top-scoring wines.  Celebrated owners and winemakers representing the world’s most iconic wineries gathered and shared their valuable insights while presenting their two top vintages to attendees.  The mood of the soiree was perfectly set with music by award-winning DJ Surahn Sidhu.

Tickets for the grand tasting were sold out weeks prior to the event, but other opportunities abounded, such as exclusive pre-events, a gala dinner, and the “Happiness is Wine” show and after-party. 

“What I like about the event is the ability to put a face to some of the bottles of wine you are drinking on a daily basis and to interact with and get descriptions from the people who crafted it, helping you to develop a new level of understanding and appreciation.  It really enhances the experience of trying other products as well,” commented one attendee.

We saw it as an amazing initiative for the growing body of Miami wine lovers and a much-needed opportunity for international aficionados to educate the community on this art form.  It also provided an industry-wide networking resource for local sommeliers, restaurant owners, and retailers, which means we can look forward to future Miami stop for James Suckling and his event.
